Painting The Starry Night From Saint-Rémy

Van Gogh admitted himself to the asylum at Saint-Rémy-de-Provence in May 1889 and painted this view the following month. The window faced east over the hills. He painted the sky many times by day and night, and he added the village and the tall cypress from imagination.

In a letter to his brother Theo he described looking out of his window long before sunrise and seeing nothing but the morning star, which looked very big. Many writers identify the bright star beside the cypress as Venus.

Where Is The Starry Night Today?

The canvas has been at the Museum of Modern Art in New York since 1941, and it is one of the most visited paintings in the city. Van Gogh himself was unsure about it at the time, and it was only after his death that it became one of the best known images in the world.

Visitors often find it smaller than expected. The canvas measures roughly 74 by 92 centimeters, about 29 by 36 inches.

Post-Impressionism in Swirls

Van Gogh is grouped with the Post-Impressionists, painters who used color and brushwork to show feeling rather than simply record light. Here that shows in the rolling sky, the halos around each star and the flame-like cypress.

The village below is calm by comparison, with small lit windows and a church spire that many viewers find more Dutch than Provençal, perhaps a memory of home. The contrast between the quiet town and the restless sky gives the picture its pull.

Starry Night Diamond Painting: How to Do the Sky

The swirls are bands of blue, white and yellow that curve across the top half. Follow each band along its curve instead of filling in straight rows, and the movement stays clear. Do the cypress and village after the sky, and save the moon and brightest stars for last. Find more famous art among our diamond painting kits.

The thick, directional brushwork of the original becomes rows of tiny facets, and the yellow stars and moon catch real light, so this Starry Night diamond painting glints a little whenever you walk past.
