Wassily Kandinsky believed color worked like music, with its own tones and rhythms. Here, concentric circles sit inside squares, each one a different color combination with its own beat.

This Kandinsky diamond painting puts his color theory into sparkle, and the repeated circles give your hands an easy, soothing pattern to fall into on a quiet evening.

Kandinsky's Color Study, Explained

Squares with Concentric Circles is a small study Wassily Kandinsky made in 1913. Twelve squares each hold rings of color, showing how one color changes beside another. Kandinsky, who taught later at the Bauhaus, believed every color had a sound and an emotional pull. The study is now held by the Lenbachhaus in Munich.

Did Kandinsky Hear Colors?

Kandinsky described something close to synesthesia, a crossing of the senses. He wrote that hearing Wagner's opera Lohengrin in Moscow made him see colors in his mind, and he spent much of his career trying to paint the way music works: through rhythm, harmony and contrast rather than pictures of things.

In his book Concerning the Spiritual in Art, published in 1911, he compared yellow to a loud trumpet and deep blue to the sound of an organ or cello. This study puts those ideas into the simplest possible form.

Why This Small Study Became So Famous

Kandinsky made it as a working sketch, not a finished painting. Its clear grid and bright rings, though, give it a cheerful, modern look, and in recent decades it has become one of the most reproduced images of his work, seen on posters, mugs and classroom walls.

Each square works like a small experiment. Look at how a color seems to change temperature depending on the ring around it.

Why Circles Work Well in Diamond Painting

Each square is its own little project: fill the outer ring, then the next, until you reach the center. That repeat makes the work relaxing and easy to pause between squares. Finish one square at a time rather than one color across the whole canvas, so you can watch each combination come alive.

The result works in a modern living room, a studio or a kid's room. More modern art lives in our diamond painting kits.
